Northbridge Energy Partners recently released a new study titled “Mind the Gap: Energy Availability and the Disconnect with Data,” which highlights the growing demand for electricity amongst global data centers, its main drivers and what we can expect to see in terms of energy efficiency and consumption in the future. The report reveals some compelling statistics about the current state of data center energy consumption, which all network administrators should take note of. For instance, data centers represent one of the fastest growing electricity markets in the world and are responsible for about 3 percent of all electricity consumption annually. What’s more, data center electricity consumption has increased by about 100 percent over the past five years.

Three Data Center Power Resolutions to Follow Through With In 2016

Josh Schaap
December 30, 2015

There’s no shame in admitting you’re one of those resolution quitters, who will be reaching for a bag of Reese’s come February 1. All too often, we strive to reach our goals by the end of January only to fall back into our old ways by the start of February. This practice is forgivable in our personal lives, but when you’re a network administrator who has enterprise connectivity and environmental sustainability to consider, reaching your New Year’s goals is critical to your data center’s efficiency.

No Crystal Ball Needed: Data Center Predictions for 2016

High-power density solutions will grow in popularity: On average, today’s data centers are reaching 20 years of age. As such, many of these legacy facilities cannot effectively or efficiently meet today’s power demands. Industry experts predict that many organizations will close down their data centers in favor of data center colocation solutions. But whether you decide to maintain your dedicated data center or move to a colocated solution, you can stay fully informed of your power usage effectiveness (PUE) by implementing smart power rack solutions that enable you to monitor and measure your power usage.

Before you can nestle all snug in your bed, you need to make sure that the only clatter that will wake you from your slumber this holiday season is, indeed, eight tiny reindeer landing on your roof. That is, if you want to enjoy holiday cheer inside and outside of your data center, only best-in-class power management solutions can keep nasty visions of potential power outages at bay.

What’s the Best PDU Solution?

RJ Tee
December 15, 2015

There are a lot of best PDUs, then, and that is the point. The goal of our product line and the design of our manufacturing process is to allow our customers the ability to find exactly the right set of power distribution features for their application. Why else would Server Technology provide so many options, from horizontal to vertical, 120V to 415V, low density to high, and from managed to not? It is because every data center rack is its own unique deployment, which demands the ultimate in flexibility from those devices that power the load.

These days, there’s no shortage of new and exciting alternative data center power options from which you can choose. Consider nuclear energy, for instance. A few years ago, nobody was using nuclear energy to power their data centers. But now, some facilities are starting to consider it.
