Need a Crystal Ball to Predict your Future Rack Power Requirements?

    by RJ Tee

Are you faced with the challenge of selecting a rack PDU to meet not only your existing but also future power needs? Whether it’s for a refurbishment, new build, or retro-fit, when making such a purchase, you need to ensure you are maximizing your investment for the long-term - yes? But how does a data center manager feel secure in the knowledge that he has all potential future requirements covered? Short of gazing into a crystal ball and asking for some otherworldly guidance, there has been no simple answer to the question, ‘what will my future power needs be?’…until now

Best of the Stay Powered Blog: 2018’s Top Posts

    by Kayla Poole

Suffice it to say, 2018 has been a fun year for the Stay Powered Blog here at Server Technology. We’ve really run the gambit in terms of topics – from intelligent PDUs and IP Power Strips to Network PDU(s) and all points in between. We covered them all with, ahem, a mix of intelligence and humor. If you were to read the five most popular blogs from this year, what would they be?

It’s Server Technology Here, Giving Thanks

    by Sandi Renden

nd here we are, another year under our belts. Almost. As we head into the last month of 2018, it is time once again to take a moment from our regular blog posts to reflect and give thanks. It has been a great year not only for Servertech, but for technology in general. It would be insincere to pretend otherwise: we just love technology. Not only are we a company of dyed-in-the wool, full-on electro-dorks, but we have a little love affair with the technology that we power, too. We spent some time this week musing about what our ServerTech PDU’s are doing out in the world, and it occurred to us that they may just be powering some of the most amazing technological advancements that took place in 2018.

    Halloween, Part 11?

    by RJ Tee

If you’re Laurie Strode, Halloween isn’t exactly happy with Michael Myers creeping around – it’s more like a day of reckoning. What’s worse, poor Ms. Strode has had to wait around 40 years for a chance at revenge - and a decent sequel. At Server Technology, we are committed to not having you wait that long to get what you want. If you’re sensitive to jump scares or gore, no need to worry about this blog. Server Technology doesn’t have a frightening number of franchise reboots or disemboweled corpses to present today. We don’t have to retool our mission because we’ve always been focused on delivering power efficiently and precisely. Over the years, we’ve been getting smarter about our PDUs and power strips, as our industry recognition shows. Not to worry that you’ll have to bear with a lesser replacement, muttering all the while that it’s not as good as the original.

HDOT Success Part 2: Lessons Learned

    by RJ Tee

In our previous post HDOT Success Part 1: Staying True to our Vision, we discussed the success of our HDOT High Density Outlet rack PDU in relation to our mission statement to Stay Powered, Be Supported, and Get Ahead. In order to understand that success within the context of continuous improvement, we took a step back to look at the big picture. As a result of that process, we identified some factors that contributed to the popularity of the HDOT product family, and in doing so answered an important question: how do we improve the product and allow our customers to continue to get ahead? First, it is important to understand what HDOT is – and isn’t. The HDOT product is not a basic data center PDU, but rather a solution to the issues of density, planning, and power management. To tackle these basic issues, we offer the product in Switched, Smart, and POPS versions that allow you to control power and measure power at the rack. HDOT is also available with Alternating Phase Outlets to make power distribution and load balancing even easier.

HDOT Success Part 1: Staying True to Our Vision

    by RJ Tee

Sometimes it is a good thing to take a step back and take a look at the big picture. For most of us, it offers opportunities: for reflection, to be reminded of what is important, and to refocus on the things that will make the biggest impact in our lives. For companies like Server Technology, the same holds true. We find that it is essential to take a step back and make sure that what we do day in and day out is focused on our core mission. For many of you, our mission statement is simple and familiar: Stay Powered. Be Supported. Get Ahead. But what do those words mean in light of our desire for continuous improvement in server power distribution? Here’s what we think.

Should Labor Day be called Data Center Day?

    by RJ Tee

We wanted to take a moment to reflect on the Labor Day holiday in the US. Today’s holiday celebration looks more like an end-of-summer poolside blowout, complete with charcoal grills belching smoke, water splashing, and American flags waving. Kids are back in school and summertime is officially over. The origin of the holiday was a little less about chillin' by the water with a beer and a hotdog and had a more noble goal: to celebrate the American worker, and the product that resulted from his labor. In the late 1800’s, the head of a then-new labor union proposed a day of rest for those "…who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold."

Groundhog Day feat. Server Technology's PDUs

    by RJ Tee

On February 2, 2018, Server Technology will join, at least in spirit, the crowd gathered at Gobbler’s Knob outside Punxsutawney, PA. There, Groundhog Day celebrants will await the appearance of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog who will supposedly determine the length of winter by his ability to see his own shadow. We will also be joining countless others in their annual viewing of the Bill Murray classic, Groundhog Day. As movie fans know, Bill Murray plays a wretched reporter named Phil Connors, who finds himself stuck reliving the same day over and over again. Over the course of the film, which takes place over a ten-year period of real-time, Connors eventually redeems himself. Not only does he win the heart of Andie McDowell’s character Rita, but he also becomes a better person in the process. While much has been written about the spiritual and philosophical virtues of the classic comedy, the thing that strikes us is the idea that making improvements is a daily commitment.

Don't Underestimate the Risk of Human Error in the Data Center

    by RJ Tee

In May and August of last year, British Airways was forced to cancel flights following a critical data center power outage. According to Network World, the trouble started when an engineer disconnected a critical power supply at a London-based data center. When the engineer tried to reconnect the system, it generated a large power surge that in turn caused the outage. Sources indicate that the power-up was handled “in an unplanned and uncontrolled fashion.” Altogether, 75,000 people were stranded at the airport following the incident. And the power surge also created a considerable amount of damage for the airline — to the tune of at least $112 million.

    Servertech and You: Solutions Pages

    by RJ Tee

Server Technology is focused on making the process of identifying, selecting, and purchasing a rack PDU as simple as possible. Our dedication to support does not stop when the rack PDU ships, and it begins when your new rack PDU is but a twinkle in your eye. We strive to provide the highest level of service throughout the entire lifecycle of the product starting with making sure you find the product that best suits the application you have. Sometimes the best way to figure out what you need is to take a look around and see what your peers are up to. Taking this basic concept, we created solutions pages to provide our prospective customers a glimpse into what we are seeing in the industry, and context that will help bring their decision making process into focus. We organized these solutions pages in a manner that makes sense to our customers. They are broken into three broad categories: what is going on from a technology standpoint, what is going on from an industry standpoint, and what is going on within a specific vertical.

Making Light Work of Configuring with Zero Touch Provisioning

    by RJ Tee

It has recently come to my attention that not all intelligent, cabinet-level power distribution units are smart. Now, don’t get me wrong – we’ve come a long way since the days of bulky, black, power bars that were available in black or, well, black. More modern power distribution units are chock full of features, colors, and options for voltage, monitoring, and controls that would rival the most sophisticated switchgear available. But when it comes time to plug these sophisticated cabinet-level units into your data center’s network, eyes glaze over and thoughts wander at the prospect of manually configuring those new units. Each. And. Every. One.

5G Demand and Data Center Uptime: A Love Story

    by Josh Schaap

Network administrators are continuously caught up in many torrid technological romances. Just consider their love/hate relationship with bandwidth. That is, administrators love the data center uptime they get when bandwidth capacity is aligned with network loads but hate struggling to ensure uptime when systems are overloaded. So, imagine how their love will be tested as the bandwidth demands of 5G networks barrel toward them.

Putting Your Excess Data Center Heat to Use

    by RJ Tee

Your servers generate a ton of heat over the course of a single day. So, why not take this excess heat and pump it back into your office building during cold winter months? It’s a great way to save money and reduce waste at the same time. Think about it: A typical server running at 400 watts will generate almost 1,400 British thermal unit (Btu) per hour. A standard 20-by-20 room with a 10-foot ceiling only needs about 35,000 Btu per hour to maintain a 72 degree temperature. Since a large enterprise will run several thousand servers at a given time, it will generate more than enough energy to keep an entire building heated for an extended duration.

    What’s the Best PDU Solution?

    by RJ Tee

There are a lot of best PDUs, then, and that is the point. The goal of our product line and the design of our manufacturing process is to allow our customers the ability to find exactly the right set of power distribution features for their application. Why else would Server Technology provide so many options, from horizontal to vertical, 120V to 415V, low density to high, and from managed to not? It is because every data center rack is its own unique deployment, which demands the ultimate in flexibility from those devices that power the load.

Every Strong Customer Application Is Backed by a Healthy Server

    by Josh Schaap

Your customer has been trying to get your application to work for about 10 minutes. But the application just won’t load since your main server is experiencing power-related downtime. As a result, the customer can’t complete his or her order. What will your customer do as a result of your application downtime? Chances are likely that he or she will seek out a competitor that can provide a working application. This means your company will lose out on this business transaction, and potentially the customer’s trust in your company.
