Server Tech Cx and Data Center Standardization

    by RJ Tee

The idea that standardization benefits those of us in the data center space is neither new nor difficult to grasp. Data center standardization is a reality that directly supports the uptime goals of your organization. This applies wherever your PDU(s) are operating, like a colocation facility, corporate data center, or hyperscale complex. You may wonder, then, how PDU power factors into this equation, let alone a small receptacle tucked into a PDU at the back of a rack?

It’s Server Technology Here, Giving Thanks

    by Sandi Renden

nd here we are, another year under our belts. Almost. As we head into the last month of 2018, it is time once again to take a moment from our regular blog posts to reflect and give thanks. It has been a great year not only for Servertech, but for technology in general. It would be insincere to pretend otherwise: we just love technology. Not only are we a company of dyed-in-the wool, full-on electro-dorks, but we have a little love affair with the technology that we power, too. We spent some time this week musing about what our ServerTech PDU’s are doing out in the world, and it occurred to us that they may just be powering some of the most amazing technological advancements that took place in 2018.

    Halloween, Part 11?

    by RJ Tee

If you’re Laurie Strode, Halloween isn’t exactly happy with Michael Myers creeping around – it’s more like a day of reckoning. What’s worse, poor Ms. Strode has had to wait around 40 years for a chance at revenge - and a decent sequel. At Server Technology, we are committed to not having you wait that long to get what you want. If you’re sensitive to jump scares or gore, no need to worry about this blog. Server Technology doesn’t have a frightening number of franchise reboots or disemboweled corpses to present today. We don’t have to retool our mission because we’ve always been focused on delivering power efficiently and precisely. Over the years, we’ve been getting smarter about our PDUs and power strips, as our industry recognition shows. Not to worry that you’ll have to bear with a lesser replacement, muttering all the while that it’s not as good as the original.

[Pt. 2] New Workloads in the Data Center

    by RJ Tee

In the early days of data centers, we had data. Then, we wanted to know more about how and when and where the data came into being. Thus, we developed metadata. Then we needed to report on both the data and the meta data. And then we wanted to analyze the reports – what are they telling us? Are they accurate? Are we optimized? Machine learning, deep learning, “big data” and “analytics” were developed as a means of understanding the underlying pools of data, resulting in still more data. Today, we are drowning in the ocean of data, metadata, reports, big data, analytics, and machine learning. So where do we turn? More technology needing more data – artificial intelligence.

[Pt.1] Hyper Growth, Hyperscale, and Hyper Density in the Data Center

    by RJ Tee

How to keep up with the need to build out multiple data centers a day? Edge and cloud computing players such as Vapor IO are finding themselves with a daunting task – figuring out how to roll out 40,000 data centers at cell tower locations around North America. Partnering with fast, flexible suppliers offering short lead times and high production capacity is a key enabler for widespread micro/edge data centers as well as building hyperscale data centers.

HDOT Cx in the Realm of Great Ideas: Part 3

    by Kayla Poole

Leave it to Dilbert to remind us that the collective human effort known as corporate doesn’t always generate the best ideas when it comes to your data center. Not to worry: Server Technology’s data center power distribution units, from single phase to three phase PDU(s), always have your best interests in mind. Take the newly launched HDOT Cx, for example. The new Cx outlet design provides 2 outlets in 1, which not only solves the ongoing issue of density, but also provides future flexibility to swap out IT gear without swapping out your rack PDU(s).

    ZTP = PDQ

    by RJ Tee

If there was ever a situation where practice doesn’t necessarily make perfect, this is it: setting up a PDU manually – without ZTP. As you can see in our new white paper, Server Technology is in the business of making provisioning our power distribution units simpler for you.

Groundhog Day feat. Server Technology's PDUs

    by RJ Tee

On February 2, 2018, Server Technology will join, at least in spirit, the crowd gathered at Gobbler’s Knob outside Punxsutawney, PA. There, Groundhog Day celebrants will await the appearance of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog who will supposedly determine the length of winter by his ability to see his own shadow. We will also be joining countless others in their annual viewing of the Bill Murray classic, Groundhog Day. As movie fans know, Bill Murray plays a wretched reporter named Phil Connors, who finds himself stuck reliving the same day over and over again. Over the course of the film, which takes place over a ten-year period of real-time, Connors eventually redeems himself. Not only does he win the heart of Andie McDowell’s character Rita, but he also becomes a better person in the process. While much has been written about the spiritual and philosophical virtues of the classic comedy, the thing that strikes us is the idea that making improvements is a daily commitment.

Average Power Density Vs. Peak Power Density

    by Josh Schaap

It’s not unusual to be a little fuzzy on the differences between the two, but here it is at a high level: average rack power density is power utilization density that’s averaged over a period of time and space, and peak power density is a maximum power reading at a specific point in time.

Don't Underestimate the Risk of Human Error in the Data Center

    by RJ Tee

In May and August of last year, British Airways was forced to cancel flights following a critical data center power outage. According to Network World, the trouble started when an engineer disconnected a critical power supply at a London-based data center. When the engineer tried to reconnect the system, it generated a large power surge that in turn caused the outage. Sources indicate that the power-up was handled “in an unplanned and uncontrolled fashion.” Altogether, 75,000 people were stranded at the airport following the incident. And the power surge also created a considerable amount of damage for the airline — to the tune of at least $112 million.

    Data Center Managers: Ten-HUT!

    by RJ Tee

Server Technology’s new white paper 'Top 10 Concerns of Data Center Managers in 2018' is a comprehensive summary of the 10 things that keep the typical DCM up at night and make their jobs harder. But we’re not here to commiserate. We’re here to say this: toughen up and avoid chugging over to mamby-pamby land. After all, it’s those things that put the ‘manage’ in ‘data center manager.’ Server Technology is here to share these concerns with you and offer our HDOT PDU solution to help you make these battles a little easier.

Rack PDUs: Making the Choices less of a Challenge

    by RJ Tee

While in previous blogs we’ve talked about the advantages of customization and having so many PDU options to choose from, now might be a good time to keep it simple. Server Technology is in the business of meeting complex power needs for every customer’s equipment and data demands. But we would be remiss if we didn’t address those needs in the simplest and most straightforward way possible.

Environmental Monitoring: Mission Critical Monitoring, or Mission Impossible?

    by RJ Tee

Data center environmental monitoring is nothing new. Systems such as the first Sensaphones have been around for decades, dialing out on POTS lines to report on space, power, and cooling. But don’t get me wrong – we’ve come a long way, baby. Haven’t we? As our friends at the Green Grid have correctly noted, you cannot improve what you are not measuring. It is safe to say that, up until now, we have never had access to the volume of information we can capture now, nor could we process it into useful and actionable data. But one thing has not changed, and that is the fact that we still rely on probes and sensors to capture all those little kernels of information.

    What is a PDU?

    by RJ Tee

What is a PDU? This may seem like a rather existential question, particularly from the blog space of one of the leaders in the marketplace. So why ask such an obvious question? Well, because the answer is not entirely clear. The mission-critical data center world is chock full of acronyms, those pesky, foreshortened forms of communication that allow us to sum up so much in an efficient amount of space. But when they take on a life of their own, they become like the little monsters in the movie ‘Gremlins.’

Fast Mover PDUs | Server Technology

    by RJ Tee

Let’s face it, power is often one of the last boxes you tick on your data center to-do list. Nobody intends to save one of the most mission critical elements for last, but time and again, it’s one of the final pieces of the puzzle data center managers deal with.

Data Center Power Market Is Poised For Growth

    by RJ Tee

Back in the early days of information technology, data centers were almost embarrassingly wasteful entities. But this was a different time, before the necessary technology was available to accurately track and manage power consumption over time.

    What’s the Best PDU Solution?

    by RJ Tee

There are a lot of best PDUs, then, and that is the point. The goal of our product line and the design of our manufacturing process is to allow our customers the ability to find exactly the right set of power distribution features for their application. Why else would Server Technology provide so many options, from horizontal to vertical, 120V to 415V, low density to high, and from managed to not? It is because every data center rack is its own unique deployment, which demands the ultimate in flexibility from those devices that power the load.

    Get Ahead with StartUp Stick

    by RJ Tee

Over the years, we have heard many data center personnel state that DHCP cannot and will not be used for infrastructure pieces like cabinet PDUs. All Server Technology CDUs are shipped with DHCP enabled so that the user can setup the DHCP server to provide IP settings based on MAC address. For those installations where that is not a viable solution, Server Technology has developed the StartUp Stick for quick mass-deployment. Now, instead of walking the floor with a crash-cart and writing scripts to handle the initial network configuration, you can sit in the comfort of your office using our simple spreadsheet configuration tool and then walk the floor with this simple tool instead.
