ISO 9000, an overview
ISO 9000 standards are at the forefront of quality assurance management. First published in 1987, ISO 9000 has become the internationally accepted basis for evaluating quality systems. In some countries, ISO 9000 registration is becoming a prerequisite for doing business.
ISO 9000 is the generic term for a series of standards sponsored by the International Organization for Standardization, which specify the quality systems to be established by manufacturing and service firms. It is a system for establishing, documenting and maintaining a system for quality of the output of a process.
What is ISO 9000?
It is based on common sense, and the standards are flexible enough to accommodate differences between companies.
· ISO 9000: a set of guidelines to help select and use the appropriate standard (ISO 9001, ISO 9002, or ISO 9003).
· ISO 9001: the most comprehensive standard, covering design, manufacturing, installation and servicing systems.
· ISO 9002: a standard that covers manufacturing and installation.
· ISO 9003: a standard that covers final product specification and testing.
· ISO 9004: a set of guidelines for use in developing quality systems to meet business needs and take advantage of competitive opportunities.
Developing a quality system that meets the requirements of ISO 9001 requires focus on three basic elements:
· Implementing quality controls
· Documenting processes and procedures that affect product and service quality
· Ensuring the appropriate emphasis on quality is established and followed by everyone in the company
What are the advantages of buying from an ISO 9001 certified company?
• Commitment to quality. Developing and maintaining an ISO compliant quality system involves the entire company and requires commitment from top management to dedicate time and resources. Certification gives you added confidence that you are buying from a supplier dedicated to quality and that their quality system stands up to independent, third party verification.
• Evidence of a company's internal discipline for quality. To keep their registered status, companies are re-audited twice a year to prove they are maintaining good practices.
